Who it's for

Photographers & Videographers

Organize shoot exports by renaming hundreds of files to a consistent date, counter, or project code in seconds.

Developers & DevOps

Normalize asset filenames, generated output files, or build artifacts to match your project's naming conventions without a shell script.

Office & Admin Workers

Rename exported reports, invoices, or documents to a consistent format before archiving or sharing.

How it works

  1. Pick your folderGrant access to the folder containing the files you want to rename. Disk Tamer reads your local file system directly in the browser — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Configure your rename rulesChoose from find-and-replace, prefix/suffix insertion, counter addition, date stamping, or extension change. Combine multiple rules in sequence.
  3. Preview every changeSee a side-by-side list of every old → new filename before anything is touched. Spot collisions or mistakes before they happen.
  4. Run and review resultsClick Run. Disk Tamer renames each file and shows you a result summary with any errors flagged.

Common use cases

  • Rename 500 camera photos from IMG_XXXX.jpg to 2024-03-15_001.jpg format
  • Strip a prefix added by an export tool: client_report_Q1.csv → Q1.csv across 40 files
  • Add a version suffix to all .txt files: notes.txt → notes_v2.txt
  • Change all .jpeg extensions to .jpg in a folder of mixed images

Frequently asked questions

Does Disk Tamer rename files on my computer or upload them somewhere?
Your files never leave your machine. Disk Tamer uses the browser's File System Access API to rename files locally. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.
What rename operations does Disk Tamer support?
Find & replace in filename, add prefix, add suffix, insert counter, insert today's date, change extension, and combinations of these in sequence.
Can I undo a bulk rename?
There is no automatic undo. Always review the preview list carefully before running. If you need to reverse a rename, set up the inverse operation and run it again.
What happens if two files would end up with the same name after renaming?
Disk Tamer detects collisions and warns you before running. The Run button stays disabled until all conflicts are resolved.
Does it rename folders or only files?
Currently Disk Tamer renames files. Folder renaming is not yet supported.
Which browsers does Disk Tamer work in?
Disk Tamer requires a browser that supports the File System Access API — Chrome 86+, Edge 86+, and Opera 72+. Firefox and Safari are not currently supported.
Is there a file count limit?
There is no hard limit. Performance depends on your machine — thousands of files work fine.
Can I use a CSV to control rename targets?
For CSV-driven workflows, use the Bulk File Create feature which supports full CSV templates. The rename operation uses pattern rules applied to all selected files.
